After an 8 - 0 away defeat to FM last week a 6 - 1 home defeat does not look like much progress, but this was an unrecognisable Metros performance - showing far more bottle, desire and ability than in last weeks defeat.
Again the Metros allowed the opposition a head start, conceding very early on, but this time the Metros bounced back and were unlucky not to draw level.
Although the next goal also went to FM it was hardly a just score line - although the pace and accuracy of the FM forwards was just too much for the Metros defence to handle at times.
The Metros played some good football in spells, and for once it was no surprise when Harry Boulton finished off a fluent move down the right wing to make it 1 - 2. Back in the game.
It was essential that the Metros keep it tight until half time, but two poor lapses in defence saw FM take an unjustified 1 - 4 lead at half time - with the Metros missing just too many tackles and incurring Luke's wrath...justifiably so - but in fairness both Jon and Calum worked their socks off all game.
The half time team talk revolved around winning tackles and self belief - and the Metros came out and put in an improved display in the second half with every player playing their part. A bare 11 man squad meant that players like Joe had to play on with injuries, and when Eddie finally ran out of steam the only place to rest was in goal.
By this time FM had scored twice more with the help of some generous refereeing. (Actually I'm not sure I've got that right - her indoors think it was at 1 - 5 that Luke came out but I thought that Eddie kept a clean sheet?)
Although never able to get back in to the game The Metros really showed some spirit and, if they play like this against some of the less strong teams they wil undoubtedly add to their point before the season is out!
It isn't really fair to single any players out, but Eddie again showed good composure on the ball, Kenny, Patrick and Mattie all got more involved, whilst Tom and Hash continued their improvement. But it was a good all round team effort.
Champagne Moment: There was a nutmeg in the second half - Harry B I think? (Correction - Tom)After that it was the chocolate brownies courtesy of Chez Rigden!
Man of the Match - Eddie again picked up Chris's award. (Correction - Patrick)
Parent's Man of the Match: I've honestly forgotten - I think that Tom, Hash and Patrick all got mentions? (correction Hash & Tom with Eddie getting one for his clean sheet!
Referee: 5/10 - A flawless first half followed by a poor second half!
Team homework: More of the same.
Squad: Luke, Joe, Calum, Jonathon, Hash, Matty, Patrick,Tom, Kenny, Harry & Eddie.
(I really need to start writing these before I open the bottle of wine....! )

Ok, first the usual corrections
The nutmeg was by Tom I think.
Not surprised you got confused about the chocolate-based match awards, there were quite a few given out....
Anyway, Chris' choice was Patrick; the Mums went for Tom; Dad's choice I think was Hash. If there was a fourth given out, and I think there may have been, I can't remember who got it, or why. It may have been Eddie for a clean sheet (but far be it from me to disagree with Bernadette )
Well done on getting the squad list right though
As far as the match itself was concerned, although it was another heavy defeat on paper, it really didn't feel like one, probably because I felt we matched FM in terms of the football played, particularly in midfield, who were excellent yesterday, both in terms of creating chances when we were attacking and in competing for the ball when defending.
The two soft goals at the end of the first half, following a period when the Metros were unlucky not to draw level, were again crucial. Had the score remained at 2-1 at half time, the Metros would have been very much in the match. Part of the trouble when defending I feel is that the team is sometimes not recovering its shape quickly enough when they lose the ball - but even if they do, they still can't afford to miss those crucial tackles.
Equally though, the difference in the sides lies as much in the forward line - FM were just far more ruthless in front of goal than the Metros. Often the Metros took a touch too many, or perhaps a touch too few - there were a few airshots yesterday when attempts were made at first time shots, when controlling the ball would have been the better option.
All in all though a very much improved performance, and one not reflected in the score-line. More of the same next week please! |

Nick is of course correct on the awards - regular readers will be pleased to note that next weeks report will be written by Nick as we are away in Scotland - so hopefully the content will be more accurate and who knows - the result might be better!

It will be a great honour to fill in for you Rob - I only hope I can maintain the high standard of writing. However if anyone else wishes to have a go .....
As for the result, I'm hoping the script is already written |
