Regular readers will know my thoughts on playing with ten men - it's just not enough - and so it proved again.
On a home pitch in surprisingly good condition and with a steady cross pitch breeze the Metros lined up against a Benchill team who had lost 2 players en route and their coach to a morning injury.
This time it was the Metros who were at full strength, with Calum back from his National Service and Ben very welcome back from long-term injury. Only Joe was unavailable this week, struck down by a bug, so get well soon wishes from all.
The Metros opened the scoring when Patrick finally did what he has threatened to do all season and scored from distance, but this time, instead of the Metros letting the opposition back in the game they struck again through Ben, who was quickly back in to the groove, scoring from close range to take a 2 - 0 lead in to half time.
This gave Benchill the opportunity to re-group, whilst coach Chris was left with the task of encouraging more of the same.
More of the same there was.
Eddie made it 3 - 0 again from close range before Kenny added the fourth with a fine angled drive from outside the box.
Pat added his second before Hash popped up from full back, running on to a ball outside the box to rifle a shot with his wrong foot through a crowd of players, and the Metros were in dreamland - 6 - 0.
The icing on the cake came from a clever short corner from Patrick to Eddie, back to Patrick who scored his third with a powerful shot to the top corner which the keeper could only parry in to the top corner.
In the meantime Luke had denied Benchill with 2 excellent saves, but he had a much quieter game than normal thanks to a much improved midfield performance from the Metros.
There was still time for the Metros to lose concentration and concede a consolation goal, but that could not take the shine off a better collective effort, some great individual performances, and a well deserved first win of the season.
Champagne Moment: I'm not sure that you can pick a single moment out of such a good team performance (her indoors is suggesting Patrick's 3rd goal, and it would be hard to argue) but I'm still smiling from the Chuck Berry impression shouted out in the first half, "Go, Johnny, go!".
Man of the Match - Patrick the Hatrick - who else - but there were 10 other contenders..
Parent's Man of the Match: I don't think one was picked again, I was stuck taking down the nets so missed the post match analysis but again I thought that Kenny was excellent, Mattie played very well in the second half and Jonathan and Hash both had solid games. Then again Ben & Calum's return helped, Tom had his best game of the season, Harry battled well and Eddie ran more than he was told too! Perhaps that suggests some stirrings of consistency?
Referee: 8/10 - missed a blatant hand ball (apparently!) but all in all did well for a parent! Suffered some severe abuse from the opposition and learnt a few new words for his next visit to Old Trafford!
Team homework: More of the same of course.
Squad: Luke, Jonathon, Hash, Calum, Matty, Patrick, Ben, Tom, Kenny, Harry & Eddie.

Rob
PS - there's a Mars bar for the first Metros player to email me to prove that they've read this report - no helping Mum's and Dads......

A clever attempt to heighten the suspense by obscuring the score in the title, and a nice opening line also.....
...but regular readers know the report arrives much, much later than this when the Metros lose
I think the parents voted for the whole team as Men of the Match, and I think that's probably fair as everyone did indeed play a part.
My champagne moment - even in a big victory, Luke still managed to pull off one fantastic save as the ball seemed bound for the top corner and the Benchill parents started to celebrate. But Patrick's second and Kenny's drive were probably the pick of the goals.
I'm not letting Cal near the report - we've enough chocolate in our house post-Christmas as it is!

Sorry Ben - you were pipped to the prize by just 7 minutes - so the Mars Bar goes to Jonny Molloy, but I'll throw in a consolation prize to Ben and any other players that respond or email!
Nick's dead right about the speed of the report, Monday afternoon is par when work has dulled the pain of defeat!

Yes, it really did happen! Can't help thinking they should have saved a few of those goals for future matches, but beggars can't be choosers.
Let's hope the performance yesterday, as well as the result, gives the team the confidence to play like that against better opposition, starting this Sunday against Stretford Vics.
Another Fizzy Wine Moment from yesterday: Tom winning the ball on the right side of midfield, holding off the opposition and beating his man with a deft turn (something from training perhaps!) and playing a sublime through ball, which really should have led to another goal but for a better first touch from the receiving forward (I name no names!).

Calum - you let me down - I thought that you'd be the first to sniff out the chocolate! Still, you are on the list for a consolation prize, which is more than can be said for some - Luke included!

| Good report Rob. It was great to see the boys stand up against a physical side and let the ball do the work. They deserved the result for their perseverance and endeavour over recent months, and it was nice to be able to field eleven players. Let's hope that this is a turning point for the season. It is some time since Patrick has scored from long range. Sunday's performance should give him and others the confidence to test keepers from distance in future games. Up the Super Mets! |
