Urmston Town rose to 4th in the league with this win, which they deserved, but rather like the Derby in the afternoon, it was a case of them being the better team rather than necessarily a good team.

Tradition has it that the Metros concede the first goal, and failing to clear their lines again cost the Metros dear. (1 - 0

The Metros did benefit from some extra pace up fron, Nick's inspired decision to let Kenny have the run up front he has so craved paid off when his pace took him clear and he was able to fire in the equaliser at the near post. ( 1 - 1 )

Smiles soon turned to disappointment though when Urmston re-took the lead before half time ( 2 - 1 )

There was some good news - despite losing Eddie to a late bout of illness the Metros mustered not one but 4 substitutes (well - once Patrick found the ground just before half time), with Josh, Oliver, Ben(2), Tom(2) all making their debuts.

This embarrasment of riches lead to a dis-jointed second half as the stand in coaches tried to ensure that all the players got a fair run out, and the opportunity to play in more than one position.

All the new boys aquitted themselves well, but it was Josh who took the eye with an energetic and powerful performance in central midfield.

All these changes took their toll, and with the Metros rarely threatening to score Urmston extended their lead three times in the second half to run out 5 - 1 winners.

The failings were simple. Not enough tackles won, and not enough passes made.

I started by suggesting that Urmston weren't a good team, and that may seem a bit unfair, but I really don't think that the gap is that large, but equally I do wonder if the lads have the bottle and belief to bridge that gap, and that makes it a yawning chasm for now.

Champagne Moment: Two strong second half tackles from Mattie just won it for me from Kenny's goal, shame there weren't more of both.

Man of the Match - Josh won it for my money with a super debut.

Parent's Man of the Match: Any thoughts?

Referee: 7/10 - missed a few pushes and shoves a clear off-side but did well - good to see young lads taking up refereeing.

Team homework
: Tackling.

Squad: Luke, Jonathon, Hash, Calum, Joe, Matty, Patrick, Ben, Tom, Kenny, Harry, Josh, Tom (2), Ben (2) & Oliver .

Finally, if you have not already done so, can I ask you take take a look at this post which has details of "my" forthcoming charity gig in aid of Brentwood Sopecila Need School - thanks. I'll keep plugging this until you buy some tickets!!

Important things first. Rob, I keep forgetting to ask you to put us down for two tickets for the XL5 gig. Still have to sort out baby-sitters, but I'm sure that won't be a problem.

Back to footballing matters. As ever Rob has everything pretty much covered in another excellent report. Interesting to note that the readership of the forum extends beyond Unicorn, with the Urmston Town coach confessing he is a regular reader. I'll look forward to reading his own version of events on the utjfc.com website!

As ever it was a failure to compete, for all of the match, which lead to this defeat. This week there were however mitigating circumstances as we came to terms with the luxury of accommodating no less than 4 substitutes, and there is no doubt that the regular substitutions throughout the match had an effect. This is not to be seen in any way as a criticism of the new players, who all gave of their best in terms of effort, but it will take time for the squad to get used to this new regime.

I'd agree with Rob's choice for man of the match, with Josh having an excellent debut. His Dad said he'd been looking forward to the match and his enthusiasm for the task was evident.

Champagne moment for me - the excellent turn and shot by the Urmston Town forward, which brought out yet another simply stunning save (caught) by Luke as the ball headed for the top corner. Fantastic football all round.

And finally, Rob hasn't asked this week, but can players (even if only prompted by parents ) please take time to register and respond to this report. This is your team, and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how you think the matches have gone and how you can improve.

See you all at training...

Hi everyone I thought we did ok on Sunday but it could have been alot better. I agree with your champagne moment Rob, Matt did well with those two tackles. Josh definitley took the eye of most people on his debut but the rest of the newcomes Oliver, Ben(2) and Tom(2) all did really well.

We really all need to improve on our tackles. See you all on Thursday and if not then at home against Deans. that is a game we really need to win..

Calum.

All in all a fair and accurate report.

Hear, hear.

Chris already knows but I'm afraid we will miss the Dean's game - a half term trip to Rome arranged for what was originally a free weekend means Luke will miss out.

Cue a scramble for the gloves!!
