On a drying BTH pitch in windy conditions, the Eagles were unable to convert several great chances in an exciting game between two committed and entertaining sides. As always Wilmslow impressed with their passing and the Eagles were made to work for possession during the early stages of the 1st half, before imposing themselves a bit more as half time approached.
HT 0-0.
The 2nd half was an overall even affair and a draw was looking more and more likely until, with 10 minutes left to play, Wilmslow managed to breach a resolute Eagles defence to take the lead. The Eagles tried in vain to draw level with the Wilmslow keeper making several good saves, but the away team also hit the bar and had a few good opportunities before they managed to score their 2nd goal ensuring that the points went back with them.
It was a great game, the players, parents & coaches of Wilmslow are always welcome as they approach the game in the right spirit and the team deserved the win with a fine performance.
For the Eagles - a chance to go 1 point behind league leaders De La Salle was spurned, and the lads must now focus their attention on next weeks game against Barr Hill. With the committment shown today by the boys, the game should be another cracking advert for top flight junior footy!
FT 0-2

Unicorn Eagles 0 - WSJFC Under 12 Pumas 2
Sunday 27th January 2008
Mud Glorious Mud
It was a relief to get back on the football pitch after last week’s cancellation and the pitch although Somme-like in places was playable, amazing when you look at how the pitch looked on Friday, and I have the photographic evidence!
Both teams seemed sapped of energy by the pitch; the morass in the middle should have encouraged wing play but the lads seemed keen to recreate the First World War battlefields and drag the ball through the middle, we almost lost a couple of the smaller lads!
Throw ins were proving difficult for both sides; I don’t remember a game where a throw in was reversed 5 times due to the inability to take a throw correctly; the massed ranks applauded the Eagles player who finally showed us all what to do!
Despite more of the possession, Wilmslow’s defending needed to be resolute and it seemed like Unicorn had taken the early advantage in the first half stalemate until a triple save off the line by Josh Baker, Jonny Griffiths and Max Chesterton allowed the lads the chance to fight another day.
With mass substitutions again the name of the game, new legs made some inroads into the play but neither the Pumas, or the Eagles were able to break the deadlock.
The second half was more lively, keeper Griffiths pulling off a string of excellent saves when the Eagles attack were through one on one. At the opposite end a must score chance was missed by Navid Nasseri, but minutes later Josh Baker took advantage of a looping ball on the edge of the area to slot home for the Pumas after some excellent passing play by the Wilmslow side( 0-1).
Chris Arnot earned the “Champagne moment award” when he stormed back to prevent a certain Eagles goal, once again clearing off the line. Guy Warwick doubled Wilmslow Sports advantage with five minutes remaining when his shot clipped the unlucky Unicorn defender and maybe the keeper to inch over the line (0-2). Navid was unlucky not to make it 3-0 in the dying seconds when he hit the bar.
Pumas have played games like these before and come away with nothing. Once they found the confidence to pass the ball, including the second goal where it seemed the whole team had a touch, and knew they could rely on super keeper Jonny in goal, the victory was theirs. It’s also great to report that the game was played and enjoyed in good spirit by all involved.
Man of the Match; Jonny Griffiths
Champagne Moment: Chris Arnot’s save off the line.
Pumas Squad: Griffiths; Chesterton; Dibble; Stubbs; Maxwell; Duffy; Burns; Swindells; Baker; Nasseri; Matsuura: Mealing; Gregory: Arnot; Warwick.
