Wilmslow 2 v Falcons 1

Despite massive territorial advantage the Falcons could not take their goal scoring opportunities to clinch victory and seal the top spot in Divison 2 of the under 11 age group. (Congratulations to Broadheath who finished league champions after a decisive win against Boothstown). However the Falcons can take great pride in finishing runners up and earning a well-deserved promotion to Division 1.

In a first half dominated by the Falcons, the Timperley side were unfortunate to concede two quick goals - one from a rare breakaway that was clinically finished by the Wilmslow centre forward, and the second direct from a free kick that appeared to be harshly awarded against a Falcons defender.

Knowing that only a victory would be good enough to leapfrog Broadheath, who had already won their match against Boothstown, the Falcons started the second half in determined fashion and carved out a number of guilt edge chances that whistled just wide or over the goal. George, having one of his best matches of the season ran the Wilmslow defence ragged and with better luck could have scored the three goals himself that the Falcons required. With time running out James O pulled a goal back but it was to late to prevent a skillful Wilmslow side completing a league double over the Falcons.

While it would have been a great end to the season to win the championship, the Falcons can take great credit from a fantastic league campaign, finishing second, top-scoring with 73 goals and losing only 3 of their 20 games. Success has been achieved with a combination of great skill and hard work - today's performance typified the the never-say-die attitude of the players who kept going right to the final whistle.

Hopefully the players can end the season with a cup final win against Fletcher Moss next Sunday.

Well done to all the Falcons -- Danny, Haydn, Joel, Callum, Ben, Dan, James S. Neal, Travis, Sam, Ashley, James O. and George. You have given your managers and parents a season to remember!!!

Many thanks to Rob, Nick and the Metros for their posts congratulating the Falcons on their promotion to Division 1 next season. Your support is appreciated and as you say, hopefully, the Falcons can finish the season on a high note by winning their cup final against Fletcher Moss. Good luck to the Metros in 07/08 - given the close games that the Falcons had against the Metros this season you will hopefully be pushing for promotion yourselves next year.

Just to echo Rob's congratulations on finishing second, and also wish the Falcons the very best of luck in their cup final on Sunday.

Congratulations to all the Falcons from all at the Metros - a super season and a shame that Broadheath held on but great news that you will be going up.

The table perhaps doesn't reflect how tight this particular league was - and ending up at the top of the heap is a fantastic result for the team and the club.

Rob
