Unicorn Athletic Sambas 6-1 Cheadle & Gatley

The scoreline of 6-1 suggests this was a one-sided match. In fact it was an entertaining game with both sides playing some neat passing football. The result was in doubt until the final third when Unicorn, once again, put together a late surge to score 3 goals. Up until then, with the scoreline at 3-1, it was Cheadle & Gatley who dominated possession after Unicorn established their dominance in the opening period.

It was in the second minute when Sam Smith opened the scoring with a neat header from a Charlie Boulton corner. It was the same duo who combined within 90 seconds when Charlie crossed the ball for Sam to double the scoreline with a close range finish.

The expected surge from Unicorn failed to materialise as C&G played some excellent football. Their determination paid off when in the tenth minute they were awarded a penalty after a handball offence. Despite a valliant effort by goalkeeper Ollie Byrne, the ball squeezed under his body to bring C&G back to 2-1. The next goal was crucial and it came within two minutes. A long range shot from a Sam Roscoe free kick, rebounded off the far post and Andy Nugent (12 mins)was on hand to prod the ball home from close range to re-establish a two goal cushion for the Sambas.

Again C&G were resolute and pushed forward at every opportunity. The Unicorn defence had to withstand significant pressure for the next 15-20 minutes. Goalkeeper Ollie Byrne was called upon several times to make important saves and to command his own penalty area.

It was in the last ten minutes when the game slipped away from C&G. A Sambas break down the left saw the ball eventually reach Charlie Boulton who, coming in from the right flank, was able to drive the ball into the bottom corner of the net to make the score 4-1 (37 mins). C&G battled on and created several late opportunities, however a deflected Andy Nugent free kick on 41 minutes extended the Sambas lead to 5-1. In the last minute of the game a Callum Walker right footed goal from close range made the final scoreline 6-1 to the Unicorn.

The fact that goalkeeper Olllie Byrne was named Man of the Match for the Sambas highlights the important role played by Ollie and his defence in this excellent football match.
