JETS HOME TO THE STRETFORDIANS –5TH JANUARY 08

The day started off with best wishes being given and received by every one there, and tales of Xmas adventures or sickness, although several were through hoarse voices and coughing. The events of the previous game and the disbelief of what occurred were still present on people’s minds as well.

1/15
Well the jets first game kicked off at 10am and dare I say out of character for us we were off to an immediately good start when almost from the kick off Kyle put through a ball to Benedict whose shot was saved by their goalie. However the "Stretfordians" settled in to their game plan and the game was a little “Tit for Tat” for the next seven minutes with them defending well. Eight minutes into the first quarter and Nico takes an excellent (Who’s biased?) Corner kick right into the area which Benedict buries in the Net. 1:)0
Ten minutes gone and Chris makes his first substitution and afterwards I can hear all the parents counting how many players on the field. I should also point out that Michelle observed that we were a good 2 meters from the side line for this game which obviously we had done subconsciously following the antics of the last game ( I promised that the last reference to that Pantomime). The ball is kicked is kicked off the field of play and Fred kicks back to the player for a throw in and I immediately check that nobody is claiming that Fred is an extra man and a ringer at that. (Okay, so I lied!). The game went into another "tit for tat" session when at 12 minutes in Will had shot go wide. A long ball was played out by their defence to which James did a marvellous volley back into their area unfortunately we couldn’t get there quick enough to take advantage. In the last minute of play Ryan put an excellent corner kick into the area which was full of players from both teams and James somehow manage to get it and force it through to the net and we were 2:)0

2/15
The second quarter kicks off as the first finished with us just having the edge against a good side. Ryan has shot on goal within the first minute followed by a bit of “Tit for Tat”. Nico does a good run down the right wing and passes to Kyle who puts a good ball into the box but they defend well. They have a counter attack and a shot requires a good save by Nathan (Nothing unusual there I hear you say). Three minutes in and Kyle again is hunting for goal with a shot just wide. Two minutes later its Ryan’s turn to show some magic with a very good run and pass to Kyle but they again defend well. Moments later Will has a go which is stopped by a defender. Full credit to “Stretfordians” they defended well through out the game. Ben, who really shone today, takes up the gauntlet but is tackled. Nine minutes into the game and Sam plays a great ball into the box for Benedict who stretching just sends it wide, but really good play.

3/15
The third quarter starts with Kyle putting a good ball through to Nico who in turn puts a good ball to Nathan who has a crack at goal resulting in a good save by the goalie. We then go through another “Tit for Tat” period. Four minutes Nico has a shot saved by the Goal keeper, who is having an excellent game for Stretfordians. Two minutes later Nathan takes one of his long shots at goal and hits the post Nico shoots from the rebound and the keeper is again there to save it. On the other side of the field Will carries off a brilliant and important piece of defensive play, our defence seems have disappeared. Ten minutes into the game and they are finding holes in our defence, we are not quick enough at getting back to support our defence, they have a shot on goal which is saved by Nathan ( He keeps on doing the business for us). Two minutes from the end and the “Stretfordians” get one back. 2:(1
In the dying seconds Ryan again puts a good corner kick into the box and Kyle shoots but it stopped.

Vince’s Verdict

“Stretfordians” are a very good side with a strong defence and keen players. The atmosphere was excellent and the game was played in the true spirit of what this kind of football is supposed to be about- FUN. We played very well and although we lapsed a little in getting back to support our defence we had a good game, we needed to because make no mistake if we didn’t this team would have punished us. I have said it before that in this column I can’t record all the good performance of individual players and I am restricted to those incidents that have or could have changed the result. However, our children deliver day in and day out for the Jets; they show character, determination and camaraderie that is very special to them and to us as parents or guardians. Guys like Ben Topping who played such a marvellous game today, James who well deserved his goal, Adam who gets on with the job in hand and perseveres should someone get past him, Will who can make an important tackle one minute and have shot on goal the next. I am not saying these are the only guys who shone today I am trying to address the fact that sometimes they don’t get the recognition they deserve in this nonsense that I put together and you read.

Happy New year to you all here and in Galway.
All the best for 2008

Vince

MAM OF THE MATCH: ADAM

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: BEN TOPPING
