Falcons 3 v Ashton on Mersey A 3

A happy new year to all players, parents and coaches associated with Unicorn.

Despite holding the advantage at 2-0 and 3-2 the Falcons could not withstand a late and determined rally that gave Ashton the draw that their overall peformance fully deserved.

Without being at their best the Falcons raced to a 2-0 lead in the first period with a right foot shot from George (his first?) and a sweet left foot strike from Ashley (his first??) which beat the outstretched arm of the Ashton keeper.

With Mason playing superbly and dominating in midfield and Travis ever dangerous down the left wing it seemed that the Falcons would build on their first half lead and win the game comfortably. However a goal mid-way through the second half gave the Ashton side renewed confidence and an equaliser soon followed.

Having seen a two goal lead slip in a matter of minutes the Falcons responded in the best possible way when Travis broke clear and chipped the on-rushing keeper with a brilliantly executed shot.

Unfortunately in an end-to-end game with both side threatening to score again, Ashton netted the decisive equaliser a couple of minutes before the final whistle.

In a thrilling last few seconds both sides had chances to win the game but both teams had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

While this was not one of the Falcons better performances, it is a measure of the progress that the team has made in recent months that they were able to share the points with a well established side from the premier division.

Thanks to Chris Pugh, who reffed at late notice and did a superb job.

Next week the Falcons play Urmston Meadowside (away).
