The game was played at The Willows School, Timperley.
The last time I remember a manager disappearing mid-season for non-football reasons was when Sir Alex went to South Africa for his son's wedding on the same day as the derby match at Maine Road. United prevailed that day 1-0 which was a good omen as Mr Prickett saw fit to travel to County Galway on a stag weekend. More of that later.
The more than able Mr Busby took control of the boys for this weekend and a grand job he did as well. His roll on roll off substitutions started almost immediately which is a pretty good ploy because I'm sure the Tigers had more than seven players on the pitch at times (or at least it seemed like it).
The match was definitely the best of the season so far. The Tigers started off playing some lovely football which again is a credit to their coaching. It was a joy to watch especially as the match was played on a mud heap which resembled 1970s football. After only a few minutes the Tigers were awarded a penalty for handball. James bravely picked the ball up and blasted it over the bar. It wasn't a bad effort but he's probably been watching England too much. He didn't drop his head after that and went on to have a cracking game.
After that OR went on to score the first two goals of the game but still the Tigers showed their fighting spirit with Jake hitting the woodwork. Jake then went to score to take the score to 2-1. After that it was an end to end game with OR scoring a third and Sam pulling another goal back. Joel also hit the post as the Tigers got on top. With all their pressing it was inevitable that OR would break away and score their fourth. Even with two minutes left and the score 4-2 the Tigers piled on the pressure and were rewarded when Ben C scored his fourth goal of the season. More pressue ensued and Jake finally got the deserved equaliser (and his sixth of the season). Even in the dying seconds the Tigers created two chances to win the game although we were more than happy with the draw.
A brilliant performance from both sides and one of the players gave some of us a laugh when he kicked the ball out of touch only to hit a watching Paul Elleby on the head leaving him with a muddy face. You can't beat a bit of schadenfreude.
Great performances from Jake, Ben C, James, Joel and Sam.
Taking of schadenfreude Phil turned up at Monday's training limping. No sympathy from yours truly but we do wish him a speedy recovery. I never knew Guinness was bad for you calf muscles. |
