With Fletcher Moss second in the league, and the Falcons only one place behind them, this was always going to be a hard fought and competitive encounter that neither side wanted to lose. Fortunately, the Falcons defence were able to withstand a determined, second half rally from the home side, to secure an important win which lifts them into second place in the league.
The first half was dominated by the Falcons and played almost exclusively in and around the Fletcher Moss penalty area. After a number of near misses, the Falcons claimed a deserved lead when Travis shot home through a body of players. Soon after things got even better for the Timperley side when James S. scored a fantatsic goal with 25 yard, dipping , swerving shot from the edge of the box. (When asked to describe his goal in more detail after the game James modestly said "I just whacked it...!!")
With half time approaching the Falcons had opportunities to take firm control of the match but good defending and excellent goalkeeping from the Fletcher Moss side kept the lead to only two goals.
H-T 0-2
After the interval the the complexion of the match changed totally as Fletcher Moss exerted increasing pressure on the Falcons goal. The warning signs were evident soon after half time, when Danny saved brilliantly, tipping a looping shot onto the bar and post and then calmly picked up the ball as it rolled along the goal line. Joel made a number of heroic last ditch slide tackles but this valiant defending could not prevent the home side eventually reducing the deficit to one goal when the Fletcher Moss centre forward rounded the Falcons keeper and shot home from close range.
With the home side sensing that they could now draw or win the game, the match was set up for a grandstand finish with both sides looking to score the next crucial goal. In a nerve racking last ten minutes great defending from the Falcons ensured that they kept there slender lead and claimed the crucial three points.
This was a great game between two well matched sides, played in a good spirit. Roll on next Sunday when the reverse fixture takes place at Heyes Lane.
