UNICORN WIZARDS 1 REDDISH VULCANS 3
After a disastrous start, the Wizards recovered to produce one of their best displays of the season in an entertaining game at a wet and muddy Smith’s Fields.
With my notebook not even open, the Wizards found themselves 2 – 0 down and with a further goal added within five minutes of the kick-off, things were looking ominous. The first goal game direct from a corner, with a good inswinging delivery causing confusion in the home defence. Reddish then doubled their lead immediately with an interception from the kick off creating a goal scoring opportunity. Reddish continued their excellent start with further pressure and this resulted in a third goal when the Reddish striker was played through and made no mistake.
With things beginning to look desperate for the Wizards, they began to get into their stride and started to compete all over the field. Tom won the ball in the Reddish half and forced a good save from the visitor’s keeper.
The Wizards then managed to get themselves back in the game with a well worked goal. Jake made a good interception and showing good composure on the ball threaded a pass through to Patrick. Patrick spotted Tom’s run into space in the box and found him with a neat through ball, from which Tom made no mistake with a deft finish into the bottom corner.
Reddish continued to create chances at the other end with Barney doing well to tip a fierce shot over the bar. Reddish then hit the post from a corner. Matt coolly picked up the rebound and eventually cleared following some intricate footwork in the box which left him unruffled but the match reporter somewhat perturbed.
The period came to a close with the score at 3 – 1 which, given the start, represented a fine effort by the Wizards.
End of first period – Wizards 1 Vulcans 3
The second period gave us a thoroughly entertaining fifteen minutes play with lots of chances but no-one being able to add to their tally.
The Wizards came close early on with Patrick and George linking well to find James O, who had a shot well saved by the Reddish keeper. After Felix had battled well to win the ball and create some pressure, Reddish hit back with a shot just over.
Barney produced a fine save to prevent Reddish adding to their lead, followed by George heading off the line to keep the Wizards in the game.
End of second period – Wizards 1 Vulcans 3
With the rain again starting to come down heavily, the Wizards came out for the final period looking like they were ready to “give it a go”. Jake was prominent in most of the Wizards play, producing a series of fine challenges.
A goal for the Wizards would have created an interesting last passage of play and it nearly came when James O did well to find Felix out wide. Felix advanced on goal but saw his shot well blocked by the solid Reddish defence.
Felix again came close after Jake picked him out with a fine cross-field pass following some good skill in midfield. As he pounded towards goal, again the visitors defence just about managed to stand firm with another timely block.
As full time approached, Matt again caused some palpitations on the touchline when he appeared to be jogging towards a loose ball which the Reddish striker was honing in on at a rate of knots. Showing more calm than his anxious father, he took the ball round his man and played a good ball down the wing.
The game came to a close with no addition to the four goals scored during the first frenetic ten minutes. This had been an extremely enjoyable match with good football, played in the right spirit by two well-disciplined teams. Well done to Reddish for their victory today and good luck for the rest of the season.
Special mentions today for James D who produced a fine performance against a strong opponent in midfield and Jake for a fine all-round display which almost won him the man of the match award. Today’s man of the match was Barney for a fine display in difficult conditions between the posts and in recognition of a series of good performances in recent weeks.
