When you are on a bad run and lacking confidence the last place you normally want to travel to is the home of the undefeated league leaders, Wilmslow Pumas, however whilst the game ended in another loss, there were many signs of confidence returning and for many periods the Dragons gave as good as they got. In the end though more clinical finishing was probably the main difference.

A great early move between Adam, Reece and Mike set the tone and with the midfield tackling feverishly WP were given no time to impose themselves. The Dragons were pushing the ball around well and a great long ball from Adam found George but WP closed him down quickly. Then, perhaps against the run of play an unlucky bounce in the Dragons goalmouth caused problems and whilst Adam managed to clear it from the line a WP forward was on hand to tap it in. Shortly afterwards the lead doubled as Alex was unlucky to see the ball flick in off his leg, having made a fine initial save. Still trying to play good football though Mike and Reece created another good opportunity but without luck in the finishing department as WP cruelly exposed this with 2 fine headed goals. In between these though Reece saw an effort hit the post, after a fine one two between Mike and Jon but on reflection the Dragons did not deserve to end the period four down.

Another tight start to the next period suggested more as first Reece earned a corner and then Matt put Jon through. But at long last the Dragons pulled one back after a great run and pass from Fraser found Reece who managed to force the ball home from close range. A fired up Dragons team piled on the pressure and Fraser flicked on a Reece shot but just passed the post and then a great cross from Jon found Fraser again but his far post header just failed to hit the target. However just as things were looking up the wheels came off the wagon again and three swift goals, one a silly mistake, undid all the good work. So again the Dragons trooped off with a mountain to climb.

As usual though the Dragons never gave in and the last period showed great team spirit and what they are cabable of. Reece was clinically brought down from behind when clean through and unfairly only got a free kick instead of a clear run on goal and then Dan saw two great shots fizz over the bar. George, Grady and Matt were keeping the tempo high with some great tackling and with some brave goalkeeping by Alex the Dragons looked every inch as good as WP. Grady saw a goal bound shot blocked after a great run from the deep, as did Reece, however against the run of play WP produced a great move to score their final goal. Undeterred the Dragons pushed everyone forward in search of some consolation goals and both Mike and Reece saw efforts just shave the posts. Even Alex joined in the attack at two corners but unfortunately couldn’t open his season’s goal account! Whilst at the other end Matt was proving a one man barrier as he cleared two consecutive WP efforts off the line (and they cost me a £1 each!).

The game ended with the Dragons again having suffered a heavy defeat but with the same team effort as today put in by every Dragon brighter days are surely ahead. Keep going boys.
