County Cup Round 1
September 30 2007
REDDISH VULCANS 8 UNICORN WIZARDS 0
The Wizards first foray into the world of 11-a-side football did not have the same happy outcome as their 9-a-side debut a few weeks ago as they were well beaten today by a more experienced Reddish team.
There was no opportunity for the Wizards to get an early feel for the pace of the game and size of the pitch, as Reddish were a goal ahead inside the first thirty seconds. The ball was worked straight through the centre of the visitor’s midfield and defence, before a decisive finish left Barney with no chance in the full size goals.
In the aftermath of the goal, the Wizards probably had their best spell of the entire match as they began to use the full width of the pitch to put together some good passing moves. However, this only provided a temporary respite before the Vulcans took control of the game. The second goal exposed the Wizards inexperience in this form of the game as a corner found a Vulcans player in acres of space outside the box. With the visitor’s midfield and defence merging to form a line of 8 in their own box, the Vulcans winger had time to pick out his man and a well executed cross and header saw the lead doubled.
The third goal came when the Vulcans striker outpaced the Wizards defence for a fine solo effort. To the Wizards credit, they were all still battling hard and James D did well to make a crucial block as a fourth goal seemed likely.
This intervention provided some encouragement and the Wizards were unlucky not to pull a goal back when Tom played an astute through ball to Ross at the end of a good Wizards move. The keeper just got to the ball in time as Ross rapidly advanced towards goal.
A disappointing first half was capped by a further Vulcans goal, again following a good piece of skill by a home attacker.
At 4 – 0 down at half time, things were not looking good for the Wizards, a fact emphasised by the realisation that the second half would see them having to kick uphill on the heavily sloping pitch.
Half Time – Vulcans 4 Wizards 0
Despite facing an almost impossible task, no one could doubt the pride or spirit of the Wizards and the second half started with Harry and Felix working hard to try and create something.
However, the deficit increased further when a long shot again left Barney with no chance and then a shot direct from a free-kick made it 6.
With the Wizards fans looking for something to cheer them up, the magic moment of the day came from an unusual source. Felix had embarked on a long run down the left wing and the defender, struggling to match him for pace, produced a hand off which would not have looked out of place on the rugby pitch. With the referee not awarding the free-kick, the assistant referee, (aka Alex’s dad Tony), went sprinting onto the pitch in a blur, only pausing to utter repeated cries of “Referee, Referee”. This was subsequently awarded the inaugural Mark’s Mars Bar Moment of the Day award. For those not present, this is the kind of thing that passes for amusement when you lose 8 -0.
With the Wizards continuing to press for what could now only be a consolation goal, Ross had a run and shot which flew across the face of the goal. As the game drew to a close, the Vulcans added a further two goals, the seventh following hesitation in the Wizards defence and the final goal from a well placed shot.
The game ended with Matt producing another of his runs where he keeps going until someone tackles him or he runs out of pitch, with the final whistle signalling the end of this year’s county cup campaign.
An honest appraisal of today’s game would be that the Wizards were up against a very strong, quick team and would have needed to be at their very best to compete. However, the attitude of all the players cannot be faulted and they will all have learned a lot from today’s experience.
Of course no report on a cup exit would be complete without including the immortal words, “this will allow us to concentrate on the league”, where the Wizards still boast a 100% record. The recipient of today’s man of the match award was James D for another fine display.
The whole team should be proud of the way they competed today. They set an example to us all of how to handle a defeat with dignity and in battling throughout what was clearly not going to be their day.
