Again down to a bare 12 several players were asked to play out of position - and at times it showed.
The game started evenly ehough but even in the first 5 minutes it was apparent that Wilmslow's position in the table belied their ability to pass and move.
The Metros soon found themselves two down - purely because Wilslow wanted the ball more, pssed it when they had it and were prepared to shoot when in range. The now familar sight of a forward being allowed too much time to lift a shot over Luke gave your reporter that "Groundhog Day" feeling. (2 - 0 )
In fairness the Metros rallied a bit, without really testing the Wilmslow keeper, and it was Wilmslow who grabbed the third with a lovely pull dowm, flick over the dfender and lofted shot. (3 - 0 ).
Patrick had several long range opportunities from free kicks, but really too far out to be called chances.
The Metros did claw back a goal before half time - Kenny, whoo had looked our greatest threat all half managing to squeeze a shot through the Wilmslow keeper. It was a reward for shooting on target. (Half time 3 - 1 ).
The team talk at half time was all obout winning tackles, winning headers and about team work. It was clear that the next goal would be crucial, but within 5 minutes of the re-start Wilmslow had scored two more to really put the game beyond the shot shy Metros. (5 - 1 )
There were good performances from those players that we have come to depend upon, Calum, Ben and Kenny in particular, and it was great persistance and bravery from Kenny that set up Harry Boulton for the easiest goal (and fiver I believe?) he'll ever get. (5 - 2 )
It came at a cost though, Kenny picking up a knock that put him out of the rest of the game.
Wilmslow went on to score two more - and to a score line but not result that flattered them, although there were suspicions of a foul on the keeper for the last goal.
Ben continued his good form when pushed into central midfield, supporting the front two well, and in fairness for the last 10 the Metros were on top - Ben shooting over and creating a few half chances. Hash was pushed forward to try a create some difficultiies for the Wilmslow back four - and did give them a bit of a hard time, but it was still Wilmslow who passed the ball better, creating more chances and keeping the Metros defence under the cosh.
Paddy tackled throughout like a lion (actually more like a British Lion at times!) and Harry Boulton had his best game of the season - not for his goal but for his overall workrate - something that hopefully might inspire some of the others.
Getting blocked in the car park for 30 mins after the game really put the seal on a bad morning at the office!
Training at Broadheath on Thursday - then a weekend off and Half Term to charge the batteries.
My Man of the Match: Ben. Steady at the back, creative in midfield and a real asset.
Parent's Man of the Match: I'm not sure that the parent's came to a decision - so I'm nominating Harry on their behalf for a great mornings work.
Champagne Moment: Calum's goal line clearance in the second half - great to see the goalkeeper getting some support.
Referee: 6/10 - I marked him 8 on the match card but that was before a couple of his comments to our players were brought to my attention.
Team homework: Effort - it's no use looking around the pitch to see who is going to turn the game around - it is down to each individual to play their own part!

Best tackler - joint award Calum & Paddy

Posted - 14/10/2007 : 18:06:43 In fairness, having read Eagley's comment once more, I see that although he predicted a win - he didn't specify to whom
Not much to be added to another fair and realistic appraisal of the team's performance.
I think we nominated Ben for the passing award. I'm not sure who got the award for tackling....
See you all for more hard work on the training pitch this Thursday for what may be the last evening session outside until Spring.
