ASHTON ON MERSEY 6 - 1 UNICORN TIGERS

I once sat down with a city fan and asked him "what's it really like being a blue so and so." "Brilliant" he replied. "We've got the biggest pitch and the tallest floodlights and of course the record crowd outside Wembley." And then there was the usual drone about all city fans come from Manchester, blah, blah, blah." As the Stellas flowed he went on about having Curly Watts and Eddie Large as celebrity fans. Then he gushed on about going to a cup final in the Full Members Cup in 1985. Anyway as the night wore on and the wifebeater killed off his brain cells and found the truth gene he admitted what we all know. The reason I relate this tale is because on Saturday I too realised what it must be like.

The game was played at Bankey Lane in Sale. The pitches there used to be regularly flooded from the River Mersey until some bright spark decided to build the pitches higher by covering the ground with tons of soil and then relaying new grass. They have also built a lovely new clubhouse serviced by a man with a smile - a rather pleasant change.

The game started off with AOM taking control. They looked a better team than the one we beat last year 5-2. AOM scored the first goal and this galvanised The Tigers into their best spell of the game and a classic substitution saw Tom score a brilliant lobbed goal with his first touch. AOM then regained the lead when The Tigers conceded their third own goal of the season.

After that AOM took total control and cruised to a 6-1 victory. This was not The Tigers' day and I can only put it down to being a bad day at the office, or maybe it was the training they received the previous Monday from yours truly. It has to be said that they were due an off day because they have played some exceptional football this season and will no doubt do so in the near future.

This week we have a friendly against The Panthers and hopefully this will give the boys a chance to regroup. They worked very hard last night in training so I think they will have got this out of their system.

See you all Saturday.
