Having started slowly in our previous two matches it was important that we came out battling right from the kick off against Wilmslow who always come at us right from the start. Unfortunately history repeated itself and a well taken goal mid way through the first half gave the visitors a well deserved lead. In a tight game the chances were few and far between for both sides. James, Sam Bywater and Ally all had close efforts but at the same time Wilmslow were a constant threat and it was Sam Speight who pulled off a number of brave saves to keep us in the game.
A half time rallying call seemed to wake the boys up and we pressed forward in the second half and held their shape a little better. Fullbacks Evo and Andrew, cheered on by the injured spectators George and Philip pressed forward as we started to throw everything at Wilmslow but it was the visitors who doubled their advantage with a long range free kick deflecting of our defence leaving Sam with no chance. We picked up the momentum once again, Ben and Mitchell getting involved further up the pitch, Sam Trevor, Dan and Elliot trying to pick out the forwards and with Sam Storey following up a rebound of the keeper and prodding home from close range it was game on. Mark was having a personal battle with the Wilmslow keeper but it was Sam at the other end who pulled off another great stop when faced with a one on one following a break from Wilmslow.
Although we battled to the end, the ball ending up in the Wilmslow net just after the ref had blown for full time, Wilmslow took revenge for last season’s smash and grab and took the spoils. Our lesson again this week, if you only play for half the match you rarely come out on top.
