Football eh, bloody football, as the great man said in 1999.
This Saturday we travelled to play Benchill Celtic - a team who we drew with twice last season. As soon as we arrived and saw the pitch it brought back memories of their pitch that resembled the slope at Yeovil Town. It certainly makes the toss an important feature of the day. The game started with Benchill kicking downhill and their goalie created his own set pieces with his long kick outs which reached Joe in goal and he had to react quickly a few times. The Tigers played well but soon found themselves behind and before the end of the first session they conceded a second. A good team talk at the break was needed to instill some confidence into the boys and the way they played in the second fifteen proved that they got it. Their first goal was scored by James and then almost immediately they were awarded a penalty. James missed his first effort but the overzealous ref told him to re-take it because of encroachment by Benchill. This was a correct decision but again James missed although he was very alert and followed up to score the equaliser.
At the start of the last session the toss of the coin was always going to be very important. Unfortunately Benchill won it and it wouldn't have taken Einstein long to work out their decision. The Tigers pulled themselves together to produce a spirited performance and it wasn't long before they took the lead. Ben C scored directly from a corner to everyone's amazement. A few minutes later the ref again awarded a penalty - this time for handball against Joel. Some thought it was a little harsh but nevertheless it was given. Their goalie who we know had a good shot stepped up to try and equalise. He scored but the incompetent ref make them take it again because of some jeering by the Tigers players. This was a totally wrong decision and he should have played the advantage. This time their player missed with Joe making a good save. It was a good game which was capped off when Joel scored the fourth in the last minute. The dollop of mud on his nose showed how he connected with the ball. All in all a good performance by the team, especially from Adam, Ben C, James and Joe.
There is one question that I would like to ask regarding this referee. I am not au fait with all the rules at this level but surely twelve yards (or paces in this matter) is a little far out considering the size of the goals. Perhaps this could be checked out.
Finally - even though Mr Prickett is back on track it looks like the England job is out of his reach, but I cannot understand why some people are rooting for David Platt. Surely he is too young and inexperienced. Methinks he should stick to Coronation Street where he does a brilliant job.
