UNICORN WIZARDS 2 WILMSLOW SPORTS 0
This week saw the Wizards pick up a hard earned victory in a game where the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle. In contrast to last week, the Wizards started brightly with an excellent flowing move straight from the kick off. The positive signs continued when George whipped in a corner which Joe headed powerfully but just off target.
As the half progressed, Wilmslow were able to get more into the game and the Wizards play became a little scrappy for a spell. With honours even at this stage, an opening goal looked possible at either end.
As the end to end play continued, George took another excellent corner which found Tom’s head. The ball fell loose to James O, who shot powerfully across the face of the goal. James O and George soon linked up again, this time culminating in a shot from James which scraped the base of the post.
Another run and cross from George found Joe who advanced into the box but saw his shot well blocked by a Wilmslow defender.
Wilmslow then carved out two opportunities to take the lead. Firstly, a striker found himself in space and took the ball around the keeper. Barney had managed to push him wide of goal meaning that his shot flew across goal rather than into the net. Barney also did well a few moments later, making an important save to keep the scores level.
The Wizards took the lead shortly before half time with a very well worked goal. Matt won the ball in his own half and drove forward before finding Ross with a well struck pass. Ross made a fine run, followed by a cross which was expertly converted by Tom who had made a great run into space in the box.
This proved crucial with the half time whistle sounding with only a single goal in it.
Half Time – Wizards 1 Wilmslow 0
The second half was played in similar vein to the first, with the Wizards again creating the early opportunities. Ross shot just over after some fine interplay between James O and Tom and Matt fired in a long range effort after another run into Wilmslow territory.
Wilmslow then came close to an equaliser when their player again rounded Barney but found the angle too acute to hit the target. The Wizards were under pressure at this stage and seemed to be being forced to defend very deep in their own half. This was creating problems in getting the ball clear and for a short spell, territorial advantage was conceded.
With Wilmslow pressing hard, the Wizards had opportunities to launch quick breaks. Tom took full advantage of this when he played the ball of the day, inside a defender to find Ross in space with a run on goal. Ross did everything right only to be denied by a very good save from the impressive visitor’s keeper.
The keeper excelled himself even more a few moments later with a superb diving save from George’s goalbound effort. Matt was then inches away from doubling the lead when he controlled the ball outside the box and hit a dipping effort just over the bar. Jake and James D then did very well to create a shooting opportunity for Joe, who saw his effort fly wide of the target.
As the game drew to a close, Wilmslow again stepped up the pace and threw players forward in search of an equaliser. After seeing an effort go just wide, they won a number of corners and attacking throw-ins to put the home defence under pressure and create some anxious moments for those watching from the touchline.
In the last minute, Wilmslow won another corner. The ball fell to George who brought the ball out of defence and played a long ball forward in the direction of Felix, who had recently been re-introduced from the bench. Felix’s pace saw him get to the ball ahead of the threadbare defence and the advancing keeper and left him with a clear run on an empty net. With a theatrical flourish, (accompanied by cries of “Don’t miss Felix” from the touchline), Felix flicked the ball into the net from approximately six inches to seal the victory. Before Mark points this out himself, I suppose you could call this a clever substitution with Felix’s pace likely to come into its own with Wilmslow having to leave gaps at the back.
There was literally just time for the restart before the final whistle blew to bring a very entertaining game to a close.
This week, particularly after a low scoring match, special mention should go to the team’s sometimes unsung heroes, the defenders. Often these reports focus on the goals scored or the near misses but all good teams are built from strong foundations and the Wizards are no exception. In 9 league games, the Wizards have conceded only 5 goals, an excellent record at any level or age group. So step forward and take a bow – Barney, Alex, Matt, Jake and James D. You might not always get the mentions you deserve in these reports but your efforts don’t go un-noticed.
Man of the Match this week was Tom for an excellent comeback after missing last week’s game through injury.
