UNICORN WIZARDS 0 BROADHEATH SHARKS 7

For the second week running, the Wizards fell to a heavy defeat against opposition who, although superior on the day, could certainly consider themselves to be flattered by the margin of their victory. For the Wizards, it shows how hard a game football can be when you’re going through a run of bad results.

Despite conceding three goals, the first period actually contained a number of encouraging factors, particularly the tenacity with which the Wizards started the game.

George started the ball rolling with a strong tackle and run, with Patrick producing a good covering interception shortly afterwards. After Broadheath had gone close from a corner, Tom linked up with both James O and James D to produce a great move which almost created a chance for the Wizards to take the lead.

With the sort of luck that often follows teams struggling for results, the Wizards fell behind after a cross took a massive deflection which left Barney with no chance in goal. With the Wizards still regrouping after this setback a Broadheath shot, eluding Barney’s despairing stretch, dipped below the crossbar to make it 2.

With the Wizards desperately needing a quick response, Patrick blasted in a long range free kick which was heading goalwards prior to the defenders clearance. An incident then followed which epitomised the spirit shown by the Wizards today. With Broadheath marauding down the left flank, George sprinted at least half the length of the pitch to block a cross and avert further danger. Barney then produced a fine save to tip a goal bound effort over the bar.

Felix then had two efforts which went close, the first from James O’s cross and the second after Tom and James O had linked up well.

With the first period coming to a close Broadheath scored again. I think the entry in my book probably sums this one up, “Silly goal. 3 – 0” !!

End of first period –Wizards 0 Sharks 3

The Wizards again started the second period well. An early chance was created when Tom played a ball into the box. James D ghosted into the box in a manner reminiscent of Martin Peters, (sorry, couldn’t think of a more contemporary reference) and his effort was well saved by the visitors keeper.

Broadheath had introduced their number 14 at the interval and in the latter stages of the period, he took centre stage to produce a hat-trick in what must have been close to record time. As I’ve said before, sometimes you just have to acknowledge great play by the opposition.

With the period coming to a close, Wizards created some pressure with Felix putting in a great challenge to win the ball, followed by a strong run and cross. Moments later, Tom produced a flick to find Felix and his cross reached George, who was desperately unlucky not to grab a well deserved goal.

With the last action of the period, Felix picked out Alex who put in an effort which almost rebounded to George in the box.

Again the Wizards had been punished by some fine play, whilst being unlucky with their own efforts.

End of second period –Wizards 0 Sharks 6

The early part of the final interval was notable for James O arguing with the referee following a decision relating to a throw in which James was convinced should have been awarded to the Wizards. Whilst not usually condoning dissent of this sort, the fact that the ref was James’ Dad did provide some amusing light relief to the spectators on the touchline.

With Broadheath looking to add to their lead at every opportunity, Harry produced a remarkable goal-line clearance which showed agility as well as skill. The fact that the Wizards were still giving it the maximum despite the scoreline was great to see.

A good run and finish from Broadheath did see the score added to but this was the last goal of the game, with the Wizards finishing the match probably at their strongest since the opening few minutes.
A goal would not come for the Wizards today with James O managing to win a late corner and George, James O and Tom linking to create a chance which could not be converted.

Despite the scoreline, the Wizards had played well for large parts of the game and can take credit for the pride they showed throughout. Although results may suggest otherwise, the performances are, in the main, remaining strong with any mistakes or lapses in concentration being punished more at this level. I believe that we are due a big performance from the team in the near future and perhaps the stroke of luck that all teams need at some time.

Most importantly for this weeks report, I read an excellent quote in the Sunday newspaper today which stated that the only thing a 10-year old (or 9 year-old) footballer should be shouted at for, is not playing with a smile on their face. Football at this age is about enjoyment and I think that each of our players should be congratulated for the attitude and spirit they have shown throughout the season. For me, this is far more important than the results, (although I am looking forward to writing up the next win !!)

Man of the match this week was a three way tie between George, Tom and Patrick. Well done to all three.

Rob - great report as usual. I think you missed your vocation - as a sports journalist! (unless you are one already of course!) I agree with you, the Wizards are playing well and a good win is definitely just around the corner. I have watched some of the wizards games this season and they are a very good team. All the best for the rest of the season John.
