The Dragons roller coaster performances continued as they visited high flying Reddish Vulcans but unfortunately were comprehensively beaten. A quick look at the match report for the home fixture commented on the quality of the RV side and they again demonstrated speed, control, strength and finishing that the Dragons simply could not match.
An even start saw the Dragons provide a good opening however after George had seen his shot saved an unlucky break saw RV go one ahead, swiftly followed by a second after a great move and chip gave Alex no chance. The Dragons came back and Reece had a good effort well saved and he followed this with a great run and cross down the left which found Fraser but his effort was swiftly smothered. Reece fired another free kick over but RV were starting to impose themselves with some great attacking football and Alex had to tip over a free kick just before the break.
Mike made a good early run to start the second period however despite some gallant defending from Jon what followed was a master class in finishing as RV ran riot and scored six unanswered goals in little time. The Dragons just had no answer and the only consolation was that virtually each goal was a “special” leaving Alex mostly helpless. On another day they may have just flown over or wide but not today! With heads going down fast at least the Dragons managed a couple of efforts before the close through Adam and Matt after Mike had flicked one through however neither troubled the home keeper.
RV stormed out again for the last period and forced Alex into a great early save but as the away supporters feared the worst at last the Dragons started to compete and create some opportunities. Reece and Dan combined well and Mike nearly picked up the rebound and then good quick distribution from Alex set off Dan but unfortunately his shot was dragged wide. Dan was through again but found the RV keeper his equal and the closest the Dragons came to scoring was after George headed Grady’s header towards goal only to see it cleared off the line.
So in the end a comprehensive beating from a team I believe are the best all round team we have played this season, along with some exceptional individual talents. The challenge for the Dragons will come when they play the same team in the next round of the cup but hopefully a few more RV efforts will fly just over this time!!
