An entertaining game but another bad result for the Dragons as they came unstuck against an excellent Woodhouse Park team.
As is the often the case these days the Dragons set off well and with Jon making good headway down the right early chances arose. Matt then set up Dan but his effort only drew a corner, swiftly followed by a great run from Reece but his chipped cross just eluded Dan. To prove the point though that finishing is all important, a stunning long range strike from WP flew into the roof of the net to give WP the lead, swiftly followed by another carbon copy from the same player to make it 2. The Dragons were still creating chances but didn't have the killer instinct. Jon’s cross got stuck in the mud before reaching the unmarked Dan and then Grady slid through a great pass but Dan’s shot just eluded the far post. George and Reece also just went wide and whilst the Dragons perhaps enjoyed the best share of the period, the end still saw them 2 down.
To make matters worse WP came out quickly for the next period with a cracking passing move to make it 3 early on. This could have been a signal for another goal feast but to the boys credit they battled on and had a good spell of pressure. Matt put Mike through to earn a corner and both George and Reece did similarly but nothing came of these. Mike then crossed perfectly to Fraser whose great control looked to have set up a certain goal but again the WP keeper managed to block it for a corner and Matt’s side footer from this brought another save. Mike was making a nuisance of himself upfront to unsettle the WP defence and a great length of the pitch passing move between Matt, Reece, Fraser and Mike nearly unlocked WP but again only earned a corner. To cap it all though a last minute break by WP saw them score a fourth to effectively kill off the game.
A good early shot from George preceded a spell when the match centred on a midfield battle with Reece and George trying to push the team forward however they found it ever difficult as WP started to push the ball around, showing great individual confidence and team skills. Bizarrely this was reminiscent of when the Dragons beat WP early on this season but now the shoe was on the other foot and shows how important confidence is. Both Reece and George had efforts saved and with the defence of Matt and Grady looking tighter there were no real scares however the team struggled to move the ball well when they had possession and could not produce enough power to break down WP.
So another defeat although at the hands of an excellent WP team performance. Their captain’s hat trick was a key difference but the Dragons need to be more ruthless in front of goal if they are to get out of this end of season slump.
