WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS I don’t know whether it was the venue or the fact that this was a cup game but there was certain nervousness in both players and parents (Chris didn’t need Red Bull to get wings with all the butterflies in his stomach!), Cup games can go any way! There was a strong contingent of support there with two Unicorn teams through to their respective finals and both players and parents were in strong voice. Michelle, the official Jets cheerleader seemed to be in particular fine form. Rick had a kazoo and an empty B&Q emulsion bucket which he drummed like A wind up toy on crack. He will be appearing on “Britain’s Got Talentless” next week.
1/15 The whistle blew and both teams started well and it was obvious then that Old Stretfordians were holding nothing back and you could see how Communities had fallen foul. Two minutes in Kyle put a long ball through which I believe ricochet off Ryan’s bottom into the net, I will let someone else sort out the ownership on that one 1.0 OS came straight back at us with the ball just going wide. Four minutes into the game and Ryanaldo puts away our second goal and we start to relax a bit 2.0 The game is fairly evenly matched for the next two minutes when Kyle puts a long ball through to Benedict who clips the crossbar. This followed a minute later with James’ shot just going over. !0 minutes in and Chris makes the first substitution. We have won a throw in, Nathan puts a long throw in to Nico who shoots on target but is saved by the keeper.
2/15 OS spring into action straight from the kick off with Nathan Pardoe having to do a reaction save. Long throw in by Nathan to Kyle in the box but unfortunately the ball bounces erratically and Kyle couldn’t connect properly. OS come straight back at us again and again Nathan Pardoe pulls of a good save. Sam throws into Kyle whose shot is deflected for a corner. Ryan takes the corner into the box, Kyle shoots but it is saved. They break form the keepers kick out and Nathan Pardoe saves a shot on target. They have a corner kick which is kicked out only for them to shoot through a jumble of legs and they find the goal, Nathan had no chance of seeing the ball never mind stopping it. 2.1 with two minutes remaining.
3/15 Our two goal lead has been halved and things could suddenly go very badly wrong, we need to raise our game. OS can sense a chance to save this game and come at us full throttle for the first two minutes and have a couple of close shaves and good saves. We get the ball out of our half and we win a corner Ryan takes it puts the ball in the box Nathan heads it on and Jamie shoots just wide. Five minutes into the period and Nathan shoots a long ball on target 3.1. We then go through a period of Tit for Tat exchange. They shoot but Ben Topping does a great clearance. One minute from the end Nico puts a great long ball through to Benedict who runs forward taking on OS but they close him down.
Vince’s Verdict I don’t know if watching these games is good or bad for my heart. They say that exercise gets your heart beating which is good for you; they also say stress raises the blood pressure obviously from your heart beating fast and that is bad for you. Well my heart was beating so fast that I thought that Rick had got himself a second drum. This game was played in an excellent spirit, both teams wanted to win it and either one could have won it. I am trying to be opened minded, but I feel we deserved it on the day, however, Nathan Pardoe pulled of some wonderful saves, that could have swayed the result. Why do we win these sort of games, I think it is because we are not a group of skilful players wearing the same coloured shirt, we are a team, we work as a single unit, with a singular goal. Don’t get me wrong we have very skilful players, but its how they apply that skill that makes us a team.
Unicorn Athletic under 9’s football dominated the award presentations on Friday so congratulations and a very well done to players, parents and managers. Well Done Jets, and also well done to the Asteroids who also triumphed on Sunday.
Well done Nathan for being voted Man of the Match by OS mgr. I suppose that now is a time when we should reflect on what it all means to our lads, they came, they saw, they conquered, however, this can be dangerous as next season could be a lot tougher and we need them to realise that. We mustn’t lose focus that it’s a game that has to be fun, they mustn’t be stressed about winning or losing (that’s our Job!)
We all appreciate the drive and hard work that guys like Chris, Rick, John, Dave and all the other managers and support staff do for the club and our lads.
