Sambas 3-2 NJ Wythenshawe Saturday 11th November, 2006 The Willows School
In windy conditions the match turned out to be a close affair with the result in the balance until the end of the 45 minutes.
Unicorn took the lead as early as the second minute when Sam Smith met a Joe Cronshaw corner with a superb downward header at the near post.
The Sambas lead was short lived however. In the fourth minute a shot from NJ was deflected off Joe Cronshaw and into the Unicorn goal, with Ollie Byrne wrong footed (1-1).
The game was competitive and very evenly matched. Unicorn's defence remained strong with Marcus Allison outstanding throughout. The game remained level after the first period.
Early in the second period NJ took the lead. A corner wasn't cleared and a long range shot screamed into the top corner - a great goal from NJ (17mins - 1-2). It was important for the Sambas to stay in the game at this stage and although Andy Nugent was threatening on the left hand side, clear cut opportunities for both sides were infrequent.
Going into the third period it was essential for the Sambas to raise their game to maintain their unbeaten record this season. The boys responded well. Within 30 seconds of the restart, Billy Nixon fed a pass to Joe Cronshaw on the right. Joe was able to cut into the box and squeeze a low shot into the bottom corner of the net (31mins - 2-2).
At this stage, Unicorn were playing some neat football and passing the ball around the pitch. The winning goal came in the 36th minute when Sam Smith played a pass to Joe Cronshaw on the right. Again Joe was able to cross the ball early and this time Andy Nugent, on the back post, managed to push the ball into the net from close range (3-2).
Unicorn were able to withstand some late pressure from NJ to claim a narrow victory and to retain their unbeaten record this season.
Man of the Match: Marcus Allison for an outstanding defensive display.
Next up - Wilmslow away on Sat 18th November.
