Wizards Repel the Viking Invaders
Unicorn Wizards 4 Stockport Junior Vikings 0
The Wizards progressed safely into the next round of the County Cup, against spirited opposition from Division 5 of the Stockport Metro League.
After a lively opening, the Wizards took the lead in the 7th minute. With George’s decoy run distracting the home defence, Dan found Joe in space deep inside the Vikings box from a throw in. Joe advanced into the box before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.
The Wizards were looking in control of the game without ever completely overpowering their opponents and were able to double their lead in the 13th minute. This was all Dan’s own work as he intercepted a clearance with his head, before running clear and beating the keeper with a confident finish.
This looked like it might have been a cue for the Wizards to cut loose but in fact they were unable to add to their lead before the break. Tom C came closest with a powerful shot which the keeper did well to block.
Joe produced a fine through ball which created an opportunity for Dan and George to create a scoring opportunity but the visitors defence was able to hold firm and keep their team in the game.
Half Time – Wizards 2 Vikings 0
With only two goals in it, a Vikings goal would have set the alarm bells ringing and they came extremely close in the early stages of the second half. The centre forward managed to evade the home team’s defence for the first time with a run followed by a long range shot which flew past Barney before hitting the bar.
The Wizards added a third with probably the best move of the game after 35 minutes. James O picked up the ball and laid it back to Simon near the half way line. Simon played a fine ball down the line to Tom D who drilled in a low cross which evaded the defenders and found Ross on the edge of the six yard box. After the keeper blocked his first attempt, Ross gathered the rebound and slotted into the unguarded net.
The next twenty minutes or so saw the Wizards enjoy the majority of the pressure with the Vikings launching one or two dangerous looking breaks. Ross looked certain to score following a great through ball from Tom D before being denied by an impressive last ditch tackle from the Vikings defender. Tom D produced a fine save from the impressive visiting keeper when he met Dan’s cross on the volley with the outside of his foot.
With the game entering the last minute, Joe grabbed his second of the game when he intercepted an attempted clearance and ran into the box before finishing well.
This was a workmanlike performance from the Wizards and despite a resolute showing from their opponents, the victory never looked to be in any real doubt. ______________________________________ Date: 12 October 2008 Competition: Manchester FA Under 12’s County Cup Round 1 Wizards: Barney, Matt, Jake, Alex, James D, Josh, Tom C, Tom D, Brad, Joe, Simon, George, Dan, Ross, James O Goals: Joe (2), Dan, Ross Yellow Cards: None Red Cards: None Men of the match: Alex – A rock like performance in the centre of defence, contributing to the first clean sheet of the season.
